I received a mini popcorn machine like you would find in a theater for Christmas. After going through the sample packs of yellow gunk oil that came with it for popping I searched for a more healthier and natural way to make popcorn. I read a lot about different oils people use, but one thing was always the same, if you want it to taste like at the movies use coconut oil.

I found the texture in the jar to be harder then I thought (though it may have been a bit frozen from outside in the box). It definitely smells like coconut, like a mounds bar. I was so concerned about the popcorn tasting like nothing but coconut. I was VERY surprised buy the wonderful taste it gives the popcorn, I can't believe I never realized at the movies that the reason the popcorn taste so good is that bit of coconut flavor to it. It also left my popcorn machine very clean, when the other oil coated the whole machine in a greasy gunk. Combine with Eden Organics Organic popcorn kernels from Amazon for a total organic popcorn.

The book was what I expected and the seller's description of condition was correct. There really isn't anything exciting I can write about a nutrition book...... :)

There is certainly nothing wrong with these and they are a fine product; however, people should really be aware that the term "Natural Flavor" does not mean the flavoring is natural. The flavoring is derived from natural sources via chemical means.

Don't let it stop you from buying if you want some more natural source of sugar that has less refinement associated with it.

I contacted this company and they would not tell me if their products contain Balsam of Peru. I am severely allergic to Balsam of Peru.

What a shame, sounded like a great product.
Would you want to give something to your kids not knowing the ingredients?

Sure, they list the ingredients, or so you think. If you call and ask them what is in the flavoring.... you won't get an answer.

There are hidden ingredients in flavorings that companies do not have to divulge.

I had horrible skin rahes over 7 years until I finally found out that I have an allergy to Balsam of Peru. Its a hidden ingredient in many, many foods, just listed as "flavoring" or natural flavoring, as it is natural, from a tree in south America.

I have the 3rd edition and was happy with it. It looks like the 2nd edition will be just as good. Not a weight loss recipe book, but by following the recipes you do loss some and feel better by eating healthier.

I do not understand the people who say that they cook with this product. It has a strong coconut flavor and aroma that would only be good for deserts, if you want that. I tried it in split pea soup that has a pretty strong aroma of its own, and found it quite unworkable. Also, coconut "oil" is one of the most saturated fats in nature, so I'd rather just use butter for most things since it is not nearly as saturated. Yes, it may not contain trans fat, but that's about all that you can say for it.

You cannot "eat it out of the jar" as someone avered because it is so saturated at outside air temperatures that it is rock-hard. It may possibly work for psoriasis or as a hand cream, but remember that your body will smell strongly like coconut if you use it as a salve. I'm pretty skeptical right now, but I have two jars so I am trying some non-culinary things to use it up.

There's nothing really wrong with this book. But it seems very middle of the road and determined not to offend. The basic message is to eat more whole grains, fruit and veggies and less red meat and dairy products. This same message can be found in dozens of other books and there's really nothing new to be found here.

The problem is that the author claims his advice is based on scientific evidence but I don't really believe he is willing to advocate any major changes. For example if red meat is unheathy why isn't he telling us to eat NO red meat? If simple dairy products like milk and butter are unhealty why isn't he telling us to eat NO dairy products or to eat on'y cultured dairy products? Harvard is a really big institution and gets funding from other big institutions. It simply feels like the author is too much a part of the establishment and is not willing to recommend anything radical even if the evidence points to it.

The author's essential wishy-washy nature is most clearly seen when he gives advice on a diet for overweight people to follow. He advises that we roll our diet plan, maybe borrowing a few ideas from Dr. Phil, a few from the Zone, a few from the low glycemic camp and so forth. This is laughable. The reader wants to be presented with a sensible plan not told to mash together elements from a bunch of other plans.

Finally it annoyed me that half the book consists of recipes. Most of us who buy a book like this have tons of cookbooks. I bought this book hoping for an up to date summation of health research. Instead I got an uninspired cookbook combined with stock advice. And, yes, it's great that the author helped create a more sensible food pyramid than the government. But I really got tired of the endless references to it.

Bottom line: surprisingly little substance and nothing new to be found in this book.
